PetaPixel recently posted an article on PHOBAR – what the heck is PHOBAR you ask?
The Urban Dictionary gives a nice definition of the term and what it means:
PHOBAR refers to an image, usually a photo of a person, that has been retouched and airbrushed with digital image manipulation software on a computer so significantly, that the person in the photo is barely recognizable.
“Of course she looks perfect in that photo, she was PHOBAR.”
I love the term so much, that we now have a new blog category dedicated to it! Keep watching our RSS feed for fresh instances of PHOBAR that you will definitely get a kick out of. We all know that real people, not even celebrities, look THAT good. We all probably remember the DOVE advertisement that showed how far image manipulation goes, from the makeup artistry, to the shoot, and then finally to the post processing. You definitely can’t believe everything you see when it comes to portraiture.
Aaron Goodman is the man. I’m blown away by his stuff. He knows his gear, his lighting, and (even more importantly) his Photoshop; and he’s not afraid to use all of these skills in unison. His concepts are mind blowingly creative – enough to knock your socks off. Some of them are so simple, yet effective, that you think to yourself, “gee why didn’t I think of that?”. The SAT’s with the pencil girl is one of my favorites. I want to try and think of more of these types of conceptual images, to add to my stock photography portfolio; as long as I can afford to spend the amount of time on them that they will obviously need. In the past I’ve spent hours and hours on images that have a very low return, so obviously when it comes to selling images like these through microstock outlets, you have to use your own good judgement and planning.
